Description
JOHN PROBIN LONDON & BIRMINGHAM FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL
A very smart, crisp, and beautifully proportioned late 18th-century flintlock holster pistol by the celebrated royal gunsmith John Probin.
Measuring an impressive 15 ½ inches overall, this John Probin London & Birmingham Flintlock Holster Pistol stands out for its exceptional structural integrity and original flintlock setup. The lock plate features elegant borderline engraving framing a wonderfully fluid, script signature reading “Probin”. The cock retains an authentic piece of flint clamped securely within its jaws. Mechanically, the action remains perfectly crisp, functioning exactly as it should with sharp, positive engagement.
The round iron barrel displays an even, clean silver-grey patina and is deeply stamped near the breech with Probin’s distinctive private view and proof marks—showing the clear letters “P” and “V” inside small individual oval cartouches.
The weapon is beautifully stocked in full-length English walnut, showing an attractive, deep grain with minimal service wear. It is heavily complemented by an array of bright brass furniture, including a robust butt-cap with a classic shell terminal, a polished trigger guard with a decorative finial, and matching dual brass ramrod pipes under the fore-end holding a wooden ramrod with a flared brass tip.
A highly attractive, legally exempt piece of 18th-century craftsmanship from one of the era’s finest makers.
