Description
JAMES SQUIRES LONDON 8-BORE PERCUSSION WILDFOWLER
A powerful, clean, and highly collectible single-barrel 8-bore percussion muzzle-loading wildfowling gun by the esteemed maker James Squires of London.
The top rib of the impressive, heavy-walled 36-inch barrel is sharply and clearly engraved with the maker’s name and historic Whitechapel address: “James Squires, 12 Castle St., Whitechapel, London”. The substantial barrel retains an even, smooth plumb patina throughout with a very good, clean bore.
The back-action lock plate is signed “J. SQUIRES” and features crisp borderlines, paired with a deeply engraved percussion hammer highlighting a stylized fan or shell motif. Mechanically, the heavy action remains exceptionally crisp, cocking smoothly and holding perfectly with a highly responsive, firm let-off.
The stock is crafted from deeply figured, dark English walnut, showcasing sharp diamond checkering at both the wrist and the fore-stock. The fore-end is cleanly finished with a polished horn tip. The stock measures 14 ¾ inches in length and features an early addition of a modern rubber recoil pad at the butt for comfortable handling.
An imposing and beautifully preserved large-bore London wildfowler with excellent maker provenance.
