Description
ALDEN & SMITH LONDON 8-BORE PERCUSSION WILDFOWLER
A superb and highly desirable single-barrel 8-bore percussion muzzle-loading wildfowling gun by the prominent London makers Alden & Smith.
A standout feature of this investment-grade piece is the prestigious inlaid silver crown set proudly into the breech block just forward of the percussion nipple. Reserved exclusively for high-status, custom-ordered commissions from elite 19th-century gentlemen, this precious-metal embellishment serves both as a luxury maker’s mark and a highly effective guard against black powder corrosion.
The gun features an impressive 36-inch multi-stage barrel transitioning cleanly from an octagonal breech to a round profile, displaying a beautifully preserved browned finish. The back-action lock plate and matching dolphin-headed hammer are finely engraved with crisp foliate scrollwork, with the maker’s name “ALDEN & SMITH LONDON” sharply defined. The action remains mechanically perfect with an incredibly crisp let-off.
The highly figured English walnut half-stock boasts an exceptionally clean grain with fine, sharp checkering at the wrist. Fitted with a beautifully engraved steel trigger guard and its original brass-tipped wooden ramrod. The smooth 8-bore barrel has been well cared for and features a very good, clean bore.
An impressive, heavy-bore London sporting gun of the finest quality, ready for display.
